Ozawkie

Ozawkie, KS

Ozawkie

Founded in 1855 and originally named Osawkee for a Sauk Indian chief, Ozawkie was the county’s first county seat, a status it lost to Oskaloosa in 1858. In 1964 the town was forced to rebuild on higher ground a mile west of its original site due to the Perry Dam Project. The reservoir now surrounds the town on the north, east, and south.
