CEMETERY

Shawnee Indian Cemetery

Shawnee, KS | Johnson County

It may appear that you've come to an empty lot, but a sign confirms you're in the right place. Few gravestones stand upright in this nearly hidden cemetery established in 1854. A flat stone marks the grave of Julia Ann Daugherty, wife of Chief Bluejacket, who died in 1870 and is the cemetery's last known burial. Seemingly unrelated are the many gravestone pieces from an unidentified Quaker cemetery that have been embedded into a flat concrete slab.
