SANTA FE TRAIL

Santa Fe Trail Swanson's Swales

Around the county, KS | Rice County

From Lyons, 15½ miles east on U.S. 56, 4¼ miles south on 31 (Plum), then about 600 feet west into the farm driveway to the covered wagon. You're welcome to then follow the trail south into Swanson's pasture to see the wagon swales (ruts) that are among the best on the entire Santa Fe Trail. Look for indentations, some of which are eight feet wide. The large width is due to the double and triple teams of oxen and mules hitched to the wagons to make it easier to ford the nearby Little Arkansas River. (NRHP)
