In 1887 Susanna Madora Salter, a 27-year-old mother and a member of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union, became the first woman in America to be elected town mayor. Argonia men may have nominated her as a joke, but she received two-thirds of the vote! She proved to be a good mayor and furthered the cause for women's rights. Her father, Oliver Kinsey, who had been the first mayor of Argonia, built a seven-gabled house for his daughter in 1884, which is now open as a museum.
