This eclectic Prairie School style structure is an exotic architectural specimen by Kansas standards, but its grandeur exemplified the rise of the area's oil industry in the early 1920s. Built in 1923 by oil contractor Russell Roy Robertson, the home was a symbol of his success in the new industry. But little did the next owner know when he bought the home just before the Great Depression that the price of oil would drop to 66 cents a barrel by 1933. Unfortunately, the house was sold at a sheriff's sale. A similarly designed house at 403 N. Maple is a Prairie-Italian Renaissance style hybrid. Drive by only. (NRHP)
