M.D. Herington purchased land here in 1880 for his cattle business and eventually built a town around the ranch, naming the town Herington. Seeing that the future was in railroads, he offered the right of way through town to railroad companies. By 1888 Herington was a railroad boom town.
You'll have a birds eye view of the yard from the overpass, which includes a pedestrian sidewalk, on W. Main between 3rd and 7th. Observing today's modern activity, it's interesting to reflect that this is the old railroad yard where more than 100 years ago you would have witnessed quite a different scene, one that included two roundhouses, a freight house, a telegraph office, and a two-story limestone depot.
