HISTORIC DISTRICT

Quindaro Ruins and Overlook

Kansas City, KS | Wyandotte County

From the overlook you see an area that once was Quindaro, a short-lived territorial town and black settlement. Due to the river's changing course, only a few sections of the town's rock and brick foundations remain. Now an archeological district (NRHP), Quindaro was also home to Wyandot Indians and abolitionists, and it was an important stop on the Underground Railroad.

The Quindaro Museum is currently housed inside the 1936 Vernon School. Opened as an all-black school it now offers many functions for the community. Call ahead or email (info@vernoncenterkck.org) for an appointment.
