Ottawa Baptist Mission and Burial Ground

Ottawa, KS | Franklin County

On one of the stone entrance pillars a plaque reads, "Jotham Meeker, first printer and publisher in Indian Territory." From the pillars, walk about ¼ mile to the burial ground where the first gravestones you'll see are those for Ottawa chiefs Comchau and Notino. This spot is also the site of Meeker's 1837 Ottawa Baptist Mission. No buildings remain but a curious open space among the gravestones is where a log church once stood. Meeker and his wife are buried to the north of the church site, and the grave of Tauy Jones is to the south.
