Essentially, a group of German emigrants came from the East Coast in 1856-57 to start a vegetarian colony "free from the contamination of flesh, alcohol, and social vices." Their city would be built in the form of an octagon with eight roads extending from the central commons. Homes would be built in an octagonal shape, as would their barns. They attracted so much interest with their plan that they decided to build two cities on either side of the river—one for the vegetarians and the other for "flesh eaters."

The plan failed but the Octagon City gave way to the new town of Humboldt.
