The Neosho River crossing was one of the crossings on the Santa Fe Trail, which is explained in a wayside exhibit on the east side of the riverwalk. To honor this heritage, a beautifully landscaped and lighted walkway was completed in 1997. "Guardian of the Grove," an impressive bronze sculpture of a Kanza warrior by Mark Sampsel serves as the anchor at Main and Union. The north end of the riverwalk connects to the Kaw Mission.
