These massive vertical sentinels appear suddenly on the broad, flat plains. Monument Rocks, also known as Chalk Pyramids, stand along the old Butterfield Overland Despatch route (Smoky Hill Trail) on private property. These rock formations, buried under water for millions of years, are part of the amazing geological diversity of Kansas. Look for the natural 'doors' and 'windows' formed in these rock pyramids. Climbing, camping, and fossil hunting are prohibited but you are welcome to walk up to them. Please read visitors' guidelines on the sign. 8 Wonders of Kansas
