Marais des Cygnes Massacre Memorial

Trading Post, KS | Linn County

Trading Post Cemetery, just north of the Trading Post Museum. A tall granite monument pays tribute to victims of the 1858 Marais des Cygnes Massacre. Inscribed on the memorial are the names of the free-state men who died or were wounded, a brief summary of the tragedy, and two stanzas of 'Le Marais du Cygne,' a poem by John Greenleaf Whittier written in response to the massacre. The poem appeared in the September issue of the Atlantic Monthly four months after the incident and drew national attention to the violence in Kansas Territory.
