Born in the nearby community of Dunavant in 1897, Curry was one of the great Regionalist artists of the 1930s-1940s. Unfortunately Kansas state legislators didn't value his style, and a frustrated Curry refused to sign the state capitol murals that he'd been commissioned to paint. His most famous statehouse mural is "Tragic Prelude," depicting John Brown.
