In 1915, the Jefferson Highway was designated the first north-south transcontinental highway in the country stretching from New Orleans to Winnipeg Canada. You can drive the last remaining original red-brick surface of the entire route. Less than a mile long, it is located on the east side of the Osawatomie State Hospital.

At the south end of the street is the 1905 Asylum Bridge. It's the only remaining Reverse Parker through truss bridge. No longer open to passage, but walk up to the gate and view the details of the bridge.
