Dying Protest

Attica, KS | Harper County

When Nathaniel Grigsby, childhood friend of Abraham Lincoln and a Union veteran, died in 1890 he left a unique epitaph on his headstone for all to read: 'Through this inscription,' he began, "I wish to enter my dying protest against what is called the Democratic party." To read what else Nathaniel had to say, enter at the main gate and take the paved road that curves left to section 3E (east side). Grigsby's is the northwestern-most gravestone in that section.
