Drive slowly through the campus to view the many elegant structures originally part of the Old Soldiers Home built in the mid-1880s. Responding to a 1999 plan to downsize the campus, combined preservation efforts resulted in saving 38 historic buildings from demolition. Today they are being privately renovated for various uses while the VA center continues to offer medical services.
The photos show examples of before and after restoration.
The Chapel of the Veterans can be seen on this drive, too.
Directions: From U.S. 73 and K-5, go less than 1/4 mile north on U.S. 73. Turn east on Home Pl and continue through the stone gates for almost 1/4 mile. Take a sharp right on Franklin. The Old Soldiers Home structures are along this street.
