HISTORY

Dalton Gang Robberies

Coffeyville, KS | Montgomery County

October 5, 1892, was a tragic day in Coffeyville. That morning the notorious Dalton Gang (Grat, Bob, and Emmett Dalton; Bill Power; and Dick Broadwell) rode into town and boldly tried to rob two banks at the same time. The robberies failed, thanks to a quick-thinking bank teller who told the gang that the bank vault was on a timer, giving the town's citizens an opportunity to gather to defend their town. Four of the town's residents were killed in the resulting gunfight, as were Grat and Bob Dalton, Power, and Broadwell. Emmett Dalton was wounded, captured, and sentenced to life in prison. He served 15 years at the penitentiary in Lansing before he was pardoned.
