Standing in front of the former Municipal Building (NRHP) are two commemorative works by Dr. O.H. Simpson. The cowboy statue, unveiled at the building’s 1929 dedication, was sculpted from cement using modeling skills Simpson honed as a dentist. His process was nearly disastrous—he plastered a live model, Marshal Joe Sughrue, and when the straw Sughrue breathed through kinked, it almost killed him. Nearby, the oxen memorial, featuring two concrete oxen heads, is believed to date to 1932.
