A designated Kansas Scenic Byway, the Kansas section of the military road starts at the Oklahoma border and passes through Cherokee County as it heads north, ending at the intersection of K-5 and K-7 in Leavenworth. Originally known as the Fort Leavenworth-Fort Gibson Military Road, this route was built in 1838-1840 to accommodate soldiers traveling between military posts.
