The Chautauqua Gemstone is a 140-ton sandstone rock that in 1996 found itself in the way of the U.S. 166 road crew. Sedan tourism champion Nita Jones said of the rock, "The Chautauqua Gemstone is hard as a diamond, warm as a ruby, desirable as an emerald and looks like a pearl. It's a jewel of Kansas." The huge 30-foot-tall boulder was moved to the side of the road and there it still sits.
