Find Fairport by going 1 mile west of Gorham on Balta (Old U.S. 40), 11 miles north on 177 (becomes Gorham Fairport), then 1½ miles west on Fairport.
Here a plaque on a limestone base announces that you've arrived at the Oswald No. 1. Ed and Carrie Oswald and the Lucky Seven struck oil on this site in November 1923 making it the first oil discovery well in the Fairport oil field. By 1933 production was down to two barrels. Luckily, that same year a new process (pumping acid under pressure into the casing) was performed for the first time in the nation on the Oswald No. 1. It proved a huge success and production increased to 108 barrels a day. It was a game changer that affected all future oil production.
