Burlington Catfish Capital of Kansas

Burlington, KS | Coffey County

An unusual feature in the Coffey County Library is the mounted catfish and a fishing trophy! Years ago, catfish fishing contests were held between Burlington and nearby Chetopa, and a traveling trophy was awarded to the winner. According to this fish story, after a victorious Chetopa won the contest several decades ago, someone from Burlington stole the trophy and hid it. A few years ago, the trophy mysteriously reappeared in the library and is now on permanent display. An accompanying video shows many trophy fish caught over the years.
