With our state animal in mind, it seems fitting for Kansans to visit Buffalo. Not famous for buffaloes, however, the town is known historically for its production of red bricks. The largest brick plant west of the Mississippi River in 1902, the Buffalo Brick Plant produced up to 125,000 bricks a day and employed 75 to 100 men. The building bricks were rated top quality and shipped nationwide. In 1939 the plant was reorganized as Buffalo Brick and Tile and as Acme Brick in 1954. It finally ceased operation in 1966 and was demolished in 1972. You can see the buffalo imprint on the sidewalk bricks at Main and Micro-Lite in this town of just above 200 people.
