Big Brutus

West Mineral, KS | Cherokee County

From K-7, 6 miles west on K-102 (becomes Scammon), then ½ mile west on NW 60. No name other than Big Brutus would befit this gigantic, massive, and enormous electric coal shovel. You can see this big guy long before you get there—like a multistory building plopped onto a rural landscape. And this thing actually moved! Big Brutus in action rumbled along at 0.22 mph (that's less than a quarter mile per hour) and removed the overburden (soil and rocks covering the coal seam) before smaller shovels came in and dug out the coal. One of the two largest electric coal shovels in the world still assembled, Big Brutus ran 24 hours a day from 1963 until 1974. For the full impact of this machine and the area's strip-mining history, start your tour in the visitor center museum to see displays, photos, and an informative video. You're welcome to walk up to Big Brutus and stand in its bucket. And when you do, think about the fact that with 1 scoop this bucket picked up enough soil and rocks to fill 3 railroad cars! You may also climb up 5 stories to the 'belly' of this big boy and sit in the control seat. Admission charge. (8 Wonders of Kansas - Commerce) (NHRP)
