BLEEDING KANSAS

Lane Trail

Sabetha, KS | Nemaha County

Lane Trail, named for free-state leader James Lane, was established to bypass proslavery strongholds and provide a safe route for free-state settlers and slaves. A historical marker explains that the rock piles marking the way were known as "Lane's chimneys."
