8 WONDERS OF KANSAS ARCHITECTURE

Skyscraper of the Plains

Ness City, KS | Ness County

When this four-story stone building with 13-foot ceilings was completed in 1890 it was the tallest building between Topeka and Denver and deemed the "Skyscraper of the Plains." For decades it was home to the Ness County Bank as well as a host of other organizations. Brass doorknobs and fixtures with a sunflower design attest to this building's quality of detail, as does the oil painting, finished in 22-karat gold, that adorns the vault door. More than 60 photos of historic Ness County grace the walls. Call ahead. (8 Wonders of Kansas - Architecture)
