Trail Days Cafe and Museum

Council Grove, KS | Morris County

For several years this 1861 stone house was the last house that wagons passed before heading west for Santa Fe. Purchased by William Riley Terwilliger in 1870, it has now been restored by the Historic Preservation Corporation, and cafe proceeds go toward developing the adjoining Maple Camp Historic Site. The food is made from scratch and reflects the area's American Indian past and ethnic settler groups. Dishes include roast buffalo, roast elk, Swedish meatballs, German schnitzel, and Irish bangers. Antiques, pictures, and artifacts augment the historic atmosphere highlighted by an Indian pictograph etched on a door casing. The historic site complex comprises eight buildings, including a 1902 country school, 1858 log house, and a 1930 tourist cabin.
