HISTORY

Vegetarian Colony

In 1856 60 families, members of the Vegetarian Kansas Emigration Company headed by Henry S. Clubb, moved here to form an Octagon settlement, a type of colony devoted to communal and healthy (vegetarian) living. Severe hardships and illness forced most families to abandon the failing community within a year. A marker on the west side of the road relates the unusual tale of the Vegetarian Colony. Additional information is at the Allen County Museum in Iola.
