Two Main Streets
Main and Pomeroy. Land speculator W.R. Hill, for whom the town was named in 1876, and business partner James P. Pomeroy became embroiled in a vicious feud as the town developed. The quarrel eventually led to the designation of two main streets, each representing one of the men and his followers—Main Street (for W.R. Hill) and Pomeroy Street. The competition was so fierce that when a business opened up on one main street a corresponding business opened up on the other. The two main streets are still evident today (but the feuding has ended!).
