Sunflower Village Historic District
36000 103rd. This planned housing development is a living reminder of the quick response to housing needs for workers at the Sunflower Ordnance Works munition plant during WWII. The Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant, as it was later known, was the world’s largest producer of smokeless gunpowder and of propellants for small arms, cannons, and rockets. The plant sprawled over 10,000 acres of former farmland, comprised 3,000 buildings, and employed 12,000 people. Although it closed in 1992, remnants of the plant are yet visible. (NRHP)
