Sheriff Samuel Jones
North of Constitution Hall. A colorful sign marks the original gravestone of proslavery supporter Sam Jones. Jones was appointed county sheriff in 1855, began building Constitution Hall in 1856, and that same year led the attack on and sacking of Lawrence. His controversial political and financial activities caused him to quickly leave for New Mexico in 1857. He died there in 1883, but in 1935 his body was moved to a new location and his grave marked with a new headstone. Lecompton was granted the original gravestone, which can be seen on this spot.
