Heritage Alcove at the Center for Mennonite Brethren Studies

This little-known gem displays personal belongings brought with the Mennonite immigrants who settled Gnadenau. Of special interest (especially to Kansas wheat growers) might well be the original Turkey Red wheat seed that was stowed away in young Anna Barkman's trunk when she and her Mennonite family sailed from Crimea in 1874. You'll also see a trunk belonging to Abraham Schellenberg, Mennonite immigrant from Molotschna (South Russia) along with his various tools, several pieces of china, clothing, and other personal items. A prized artifact is the prototype of a plow invented by Heinrich Sommerfeld. To fully appreciate this museum, ask for Peggy Goertzen when you arrive. Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-12 p.m. and 1:30-4 p.m. Hours reduced during the summer, so email or call ahead for details.
