Controversial Post Office
Main and Pomeroy. The story goes that an attempt to heal the north-south (Pomeroy-Hill) feud happened in 1917 when a new post office was built at Pomeroy and Main. But bad feelings surfaced when it could not be agreed upon on which side to put the door. In the end, the post office had two doors and these words were inscribed on the sidewalk: “Where we meet and part forever.” The maxim can still be read on the sidewalk at Pomeroy and Main in front of what is now a one-door post office.
