HISTORY

Zebulon Pike Plaza

The plaza commemorates Captain Pike crossing the Pawnee River near present Larned in October 1806, and recognizes where he and his men camped during his Red River Expedition. Pike's 1806 journals and maps provided information that helped open the trade route that would become the Santa Fe Trail. Numerous markers interpret the many aspects of Pike's presence in this area, as well as that of other American and Spanish explorers and of Santa Fe Trail travelers.
