WPA Manter Dam

Manter, KS | Stanton County

From Main, 6 ¾ miles west on U.S. 160, 1 ½ miles north on X, 1 mile west on 17, ¾ mile north on unnamed road, then ¼ mile northeast on a field road. Consider your vehicle as the roads can be pretty rough. At your destination you'll see remnants of stone, concrete, and rebar left from the 1935 Manter Dam construction, but the dam was never completed. A hike takes you through rocky outcroppings overlooking the Buffalo Creek bed, and wandering among wildflowers and looking for fossils makes for a pleasant day. At the same time, this area has an eerie, otherworldly feel to it, almost as if you've gone back to a prehistoric time. An exhibit at the Stanton County Museum tells more about the dam that never was.
