The tree depicted in the mural has been part of the town's history since 1895. An American elm sapling grew near the town well where retired men would gather to sit and talk. This spot acquired the name "Bum's Park," and the tree became known as "The Tree of Knowledge" owing to the men being "such a repository of wisdom." The tree eventually died from Dutch elm disease, but an oak tree stands in its place.
