
The town was laid out in 1887 on the site of Mine No.1 of the Cherokee-Pittsburg Coal Company. The following year an underground explosion killed 47 miners and became the greatest mine disaster in Kansas. The 1910 census recorded 21 nationalities (predominantly Italian) among Frontenac's 3,000 residents, establishing the town as the melting pot of Kansas.
