HAND-DUG WELL

Selkirk Hand-Dug Well

Selkirk, KS | Wichita County

The 1887 Selkirk Well is believed to be the last hand-dug railroad well in existence. A wrought-iron fence surrounds the 102-foot-deep, 24-foot-circumference well, and wire panels cover the opening, but you can still look down and see the bottom. A nearby 1909 Santa Fe depot and caboose lend a bit more history to this site.
