Teaching cavalry tactics and maintaining horses played integral roles in army life when Fort Riley became the site of the U.S. Cavalry School in 1887. As wars modernized, however, horses' use diminished and finally ended in 1949. Horses returned to the fort in 1992 with the founding of the Commanding General's Mounted Color Guard. This unit, outfitted in Civil War period gear, honors the horse and horse soldier with demonstrations at events and official ceremonies. An 1889 limestone stable houses the color guard mounts. You may walk its old cobblestone hallway to see the horses and their dates of service posted at each stall.
