James Knox Clark operated a transfer/hauling business in Hutchinson when he was hired by the new Harper Town Company to haul belongings from the train to the new settlement. He did such a good job that he was asked to move his business to Harper. He was reluctant to do so, but when he was promised his choice of farmland he made the move. When you see "Clark 1877" boldly painted on the red barn 1 mile east of Harper on U.S. 160 you'll see the place he chose. The land is still in his family.
