Wellsville's own Elizabeth "Grandma" Layton has left a remarkable legacy nationwide. Experiencing severe depression during the 1940s, she battled her illness with art. This talented and amazing woman took her first art class when she was 68. Her compelling self-portraits address a wide variety of social issues including AIDS, censorship, the right to die, aging, and loneliness. Some of her originals are displayed in the Wellsville Public Library. 8 Wonders of Kansas Art finalist
