Valentin Gerth, purportedly the first white settler in Anderson County, built this rough-hewn log house in 1856. Moved a few miles to this riverbank location, the cabin may have been used as a stop on the Underground Railroad. The cabin is not usually open but just exploring around the outside environs make it worth a stop. Private or group tours can be arranged by emailing, information@historyandersoncoks.org or calling. Gerth and his wife, Mary, are buried in Greeley Cemetery just north of town.
