BLEEDING KANSAS

Fort History

Fort Riley, KS | Geary County

Fort Riley (NRHP; 8 Wonders of Kansas - History) was named for Major General Bennett C. Riley who led the first military escort on the Santa Fe Trail in 1829. Built in 1853, the fort was one of a series of military posts founded to protect settlers and traders crossing Kansas to the West. It played a vital peacekeeping role during the 1850s Kansas territorial period, and after the Civil War it became a staging area for troops. The fort has served as a training center during all major wars of the 20th and 21st centuries. A drive through the historic post takes you along curving lanes and shaded environs past the many limestone homes, halls, monuments, and much more.
