One of the early sites for the National Chautauqua Assembly in Kansas, Forest Park hosted these educational and entertaining events (chautauquas) for hundreds of eager area folks from 1883 to 1914. George Washburn's son Clarence designed the park's entrance pillars. A brass plaque honors a Kansas company that served in the Spanish-American War.
