Founded in 1863, the university has been known by many names, including Kansas State Teachers College from 1923 to 1974. In 1922 the Memorial Union became the first chartered student union west of the Mississippi River, and its original columned entrance remains today. Other points of interest on campus include the 1938 football stadium wall built by the WPA, the Norman Eppink Art Gallery, and the 1890s one-room stone schoolhouse at 18th and Merchant.
