Butterfield Trail Historical Museum

Russell Springs, KS | Logan County

515 Hilts. You'll find the museum inside the former Logan County courthouse (NRHP), an 1887 two-story limestone and brick structure. The last county seat change in Kansas happened here in 1963 when the county government moved from Russell Springs to Oakley and abandoned this courthouse. Today you can wander through this revitalized building and learn about the Butterfield Overland Despatch, the Messamore Fossil Collection, and area history. The courtroom retains original furnishings and fixtures, and you can almost hear the gavel fall. First Tuesday in May-Labor Day, Tuesday-Saturday 9 a.m.-12 p.m. and 1-5 p.m.; Sunday 1-5 p.m.
