Benny's Westside

Eureka, KS | Greenwood County

Good times are found inside this 1939 former service station and cafe, which are rich in history and architectural character. The service bay is now the bar, complete with a garage door that opens onto an outdoor patio. The sandwiches, soup, and service are superb. (NRHP)

Here's the story of the place: This former gas station and motel take you back to a time when Americans drove cross-country on smaller highways and through every small town along the way. Travelers needed roadside service stations, cafes, and lodging, which were sometimes combined into one property. This series of buildings was constructed in 1939 as a combination service station, cafe, and three cabins with carports. They were built in a regional architectural style known as Ozark Giraffe, a version of cobblestone-house construction. In the years that followed, larger cabins were added and smaller ones torn down. Today the former service station is a popular restaurant and bar known as Benny's Westside. (NRHP)
