The present institution has evolved from the Indian mission (1848-1869), to an early Catholic college (1869-1931), to a Jesuit seminary (1931-1967). The educational complex then sat empty until 1978 when the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) acquired the college, restored the buildings, and established St. Mary's Academy for grades K-12 and re-established St. Mary's College. Today students from around the world attend this facility.

The newly-built church seats 1,500 people and hosts a traditional Latin Mass where priests face away from the congregation and women wear head coverings.
