In the 1880s Asa Soule's mammoth Eureka Canal ran through here to irrigate land in Gray and Ford Counties. In the 1930s when the ditch was filled in, the area was named Canal Avenue. You can still see earthen mounds between Ingalls and Cimarron on either side of U.S. 50 indicating where the canal once ran (see third picture in gallery) in many places.

Note: The first two pictures in the gallery are across from the sign. One is beside the driveway across from the sign. The other is of the golf course, catty-corner to the sign. Could these be earthen mounds from the digging of the canal?
