When you're the Ornate Box Turtle Capital of the World, you might as well show it. That's exactly what Caldwell has done. In 1986, Larry Miller's sixth-grade class successfully petitioned the Kansas Legislature to designate the ornate box turtle as the official state reptile. Today, a dozen colorful fiberglass turtles can be found downtown, each painted in its own style to tell a piece of the story of this town of 990.
